A roof is the covering on the uppermost part of a building. A roof protects the building and its contents from the effects of weather. Structures that require roofs range from a letter box to a cathedral or stadium, dwellings being the most numerous.

In most countries a roof protects primarily against rain. Depending upon the nature of the building, the roof may also protect against heat, against sunlight, against cold and against wind. The construction of a roof is determined by its method of support and how the underneath space is bridged and whether or not the roof is pitched. The pitch is the angle at which the roof rises from its lowest to highest point. Most domestic architecture, except in very dry regions, has roofs which are sloped, or pitched. The pitch is partly dependent upon stylistic factors, but has more to do with practicalities. Some types of roofing, for example thatch, require a steep pitch in order to be waterproof and durable.[1] Other types of roofing, for example pantiles, are unstable on a steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a relatively low angle. In regions where there is little rain, an almost flat roof with a slight run-off provides adequate protection against an occasional downpour.

A C-39 roofing contractor installs products and repairs surfaces that seal, waterproof and weatherproof structures. This work is performed to prevent water or its derivatives, compounds or solids from penetrating such protection and gaining access to material or space beyond. How to repair asphalt shingles

Here are some basic steps on how to repair asphalt shingles:

· Fix a curling shingle similarly. Glue it down with roofing cement and tack the edges down with roofing nails.

· Remove completely damaged shingles and replace them.

· Work on shingles in warm weather so they’ll be flexible. Cold shingles will crack.

· Put a small portion of roofing cement over each nail head to keep water from leaking into the nail holes.

Emergency repair procedures can be considered temporary due to being performed by a non-professional roofing contractor. Permanent repairs should be made by a professional roofing contractor as soon as weather permits. If the roofing system is under a manufacturer’s warranty, the roofing material manufacturer, and the installing contractor should be contacted as soon as possible.

The following are emergency repair guidelines that may be performed by non-roofing professionals, or by professional roofing contractors.

Resist the urge to get up on a ladder to take a closer look at your damaged roof. Leave that to a professional. Here is some inspection advice:

If you can’t see from a distance, wear non-slip rubber soled shoes and use a firmly braced or tied off ladder equipped with rubber safety feet.
Do not walk on the roof. You could damage the protective surface of the roof, and you could also fall off or through a weak damaged roof.
If you find large accumulations of shingle surface granules in the gutters, it can mean that the roof should be inspected by the roofing contractor.
Tile roofs should be checked for cracked, missing, or loose pieces of roofing material. For asphalt or wood shingle roofs, look for protruding nails.
On flat roofs, check for bare spots in the gravel surface and check for standing water.
Check the flashing on chimneys, vents, skylights, wall/roof junctions, and other areas.
Check television and radio antennas to see if there are leaks that are a result of improper sealing of openings made in the roof.

Attempt to control the spread of the water seeping in. This water will damage the internal structure and can be a source for further damage to the roof, if not checked at the earliest.
Remove any puddles of water or stagnant water formation from the roof. This can be a major cause of roof damage.
Locate the exact source of the leak. Sometimes, the leak is actually at another location from where the internal inspection indicates.
Use appropriate materials to plug the leak based on the type of the roof and material used to construct it.

For emergency roof repairs many contractors use the following materials: patches, rubber sheets, sealants, tarps and Duct tape. They act as stopgap arrangements on which a more permanent repair can be undertaken at a later time and date by an experienced roofer. The emergency methods for roof repair are as follows:

Clean the area around the leak and then apply the patch. The debris, water and dirt around the leak will un-stick the emergency patch and reduce its effectiveness.
In case of roofs that require hammer or nail work, make sure that the tools are secure to the person attempting the repair. They can slide off and cause further damage.

It is generally not advisable to attempt roof repairs until after the severe weather has ceased, due to the danger of high winds and the possibility of a lightning strike. If you decide to inspect the roof yourself, you have to be really careful due to possible hazardous condition of the roof. Asphalt roof shingles

Asphalt roof shingles are the most common covering used on residential properties in North America. More recently many manufacturers began producing shingles using a fiberglass mat to replace the felt.

The fiberglass mat was thought to have good tear resistance, possibly slightly better fire resistance, and as the mat was generally thinner than the felt mat, and also very importantly there is an economic factors for both the manufacturer (less asphalt used in the mat) and the roofing installer (lighter material, easier to install).

An asphalt shingle roof should last between 15 and 20 years if it’s maintained properly. You should always conduct preventative maintenance of your roof to avoid costly and large repairs.

Save a torn shingle by applying a layer of roofing cement on the back of each torn section with a putty knife. Press the pieces into position so the cement bonds between the pieces and also sticks them to the shingle beneath them. Hammer roofing nails along the repair to hold it in place.

Isolated small holes or cracks in shingles can be temporarily repaired by toweling on plastic roofing cement. Curled shingles can often be cemented back in place. Individual shingles that are badly damaged can be replaced by slipping a pry bar under the damaged shingle, removing the nails, sliding the shingle out, replacing the shingle, and applying roofing cement to the new nail heads and the bottom edge of the new shingle, and the one above.

If a large number of shingles exhibit excessive drying out, curling, loss of protective granules, cracking, or other deterioration, or if there is evidence of significant leaks that are not due to faulty flashing, then a complete shingle replacement is likely to be required.
